Firebird , Carcass’ın gitarist / vokalisti olan Bill Steer tarafından 1999’da kuruldu. Avrupa’daki grindcore ve death metal’in öncülerinden olan Napalm Death ve Carcass’ta çalmış olan Bill Steer için , 70’lerin blues-rock tarzı bir grup kurmak radikal bir karardı. Firebird’ün kadrosuna, bir takım bass ve davulcu geldi ve gitti. Ama, Bill’in gitar ve vokali, grubun uyumunu korudu. Firebird 1999’a geldiğinde, Steer takıma, bassçı Leo Smee’yi ve Spiritual Beggars’ın davulcusu Ludwig Witt’i kadroya kattı. Bu kadro, Firebird ve Deluxe albümlerini kaydetti. 2002’de bassçı ve davulcu gruptan ayrılınca Steer, kadroya bassist Tobias Nilsson ve davulcu George Atlagic’i kattığını açıkladı. Alabama Shakes, Athens, Alabama’da 2009 yılında kurulmuş Amerikan rock grubudur. Grup solist Brittany Howard, gitarist Heath Fogg, basscı Zac Cockrell ve davulcu Steve Johnson’dan oluşuyor. Grubun kuruluşu Brittany Howard ile Zac Cockrell’in lisede psikoloji sınıfında tanışmaları ve okuldan sonra buluşup şarkı yazmaya başlamaları ve roots rock, progressive rock, soul ve country gibi değişik müzik türleri üzerinde tecrübe edinmelerine dayanıyor. Bir süre sonra ikiliye yerel bir müzik mağazasında çalışan Steve Johnson katılmasıyla üçlü Decatur, Alabama’da bir stüdyoya girip, yazdıkları şarkılardan bazılarını kaydetti.
